Understanding HIV Drugs Involves Understanding The HIV Life Cycle


To understand how different HIV medications work, it is helpful to be familiar with the life cycle of the HIV virus. All viruses are like “parasites”. They cannot live outside of a host, and they need to infect a host cell to replicate. Once inside a cell, a virus will “hijack” the cells machinery to manufacture new viruses.

The HIV Life Cycle

HIV infects cells of the immune system. These cells have receptors on their surface called CD4; they are collectively called CD4 cells. The main target of HIV is the T-helper cell (also called a T4-lymphocyte). The T-helper cell is responsible for warning the immune system that there are pathogens (in this case HIV) present.


1) Binding and Fusion

Once the virus binds to the T-helper cell, it fuses with the cell. HIV then enters the cell and releases its RNA (genetic material) into the cell. This entry can be inhibited by entry inhibitors (enfuvirtide and maraviroc). The viral RNA then takes over the T-helper cell and turns it into a HIV “factory”.

DNA versus RNA

DNA and RNA are both genetic material. DNA is like a “blueprint” to create RNA. The RNA is then used to make proteins. Both are present in the nucleus of the cell.

2) Reverse Transcription

A HIV enzyme, called reverse transcriptase, converts HIV RNA into HIV DNA. This is called reverse transcription, because instead of DNA being used to make RNA, the viral RNA is used to make viral DNA. Reverse transcription can be blocked by nucleoside and nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (emtricitabine, lamivudine, zidovudine, stavudine, abacavir, tenofovir, and didanosine) and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (efavirenz, rilpivirine, etravirine, delavirdine, nevirapine).

3) Integration

The newly formed HIV DNA is transported to the T-helper cell nucleus, and a HIV enzyme, called integrase, “hides” the DNA. Integrase incorporates the viral DNA into the T-helper cell’s DNA. At this point the integrated HIV DNA is called a provirus. This step can be blocked by integrase inhibitors (raltegravir and elvitegravir).

4) Transcription

A T-helper cell enzyme, called RNA polymerase, is then directed to make copies of HIV genetic material which will ultimately become long chains of HIV proteins. There are no approved drugs to inhibit this stage of the life cycle; however, research is being conducted to develop new drugs that will effectively block this step.

5) Assembly

A HIV enzyme, called protease, then cuts up the long protein chains into smaller protein molecules. These will be used to create HIV enzymes or structural components of the new virus particles. Assembly can be inhibited by protease inhibitors (tipranavir, indinavir, saquinavir, lopinavir, fosamprenavir, ritonavir, darunavir, atazanavir, and nelfinavir).

6) Budding

The newly created virus pushes out (“buds”) from the host T-helper cell. These new viruses must mature before they become infectious. This involves the processing of viral proteins. There are currently no drugs that block maturation; however, this is an area of ongoing research.

Newest Erectile Dysfunction Drug Approved By FDA

It has been a decade since any new treatments have been added to the pharmaceutical offerings for treatment of erectile dysfunction, or ED. On April 27, 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a press release announcing that the agency had approved a new medication, Stendra, that is intended to aid in the treatment of ED.

Stendra(Avanafil), Can Help In Treating Erectile Dysfunction


Stendra, the trade name for avanafil, joins the ranks of Viagra, Levitra and Cialis as medications to aid in increasing blood flow to the penis. All four drugs are in the class called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors.

The Role of Clinical Research Studies

As with any new drug seeking approval from the FDA, years of background testing first in laboratories and then in humans must be completed. The research conclusions must demonstrate both effectiveness of the drug and its safety.

A total of three double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical studies that included more than 1200 participants. Study participants were followed for a 12-week course of one of the three dosages available for avanafil or a placebo 30 minutes prior to sexual activity; a smaller subset was monitored for an additional forty weeks.

The FDA reports that study participants, who were asked every four weeks to complete a questionnaire on erectile function, vaginal penetration and sexual intercourse, showed a "statistically significant improvement" in all three areas with each of the available doses.

Side effects of Stendra reported in more than 2 percent of study participants included headache, facial flushing, back pain and nasal congestion. As with the other PDE5 inhibitors, there is the possibility of the rare occurance of an erection that lasts longer than four hours (priapism) that requires immediate medical attention.

Bottom Line

Precautions with Stendra are the same as with the other ED medications: men who take nitrate medications should not take this medication and severe side effects such as vision and hearing changes/loss may occur.

Mayo Clinic notes that prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer which occurs in men. UCLA Stem Cell Research May Lead To Improved Prostate Cancer Treatment

Researchers at UCLA’s Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research have made another breakthrough in the fight against prostate cancer. They found that two types of malignant prostate cancer cells can develop in one type of stem cell; thus, making prostate cancer stem cells a “moving target” for treatments. The researchers note that the finding could lead to new and improved treatments that can target prostate cancer cells. They published their findings online on November 26 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Adult stem cells are regenerative cells that replace diseased or damaged cells in organs. The researchers previously reported that prostate cancer can originate in basal type stem cells. The new study, based on that research, showed that tumors can start in basal stem cells that evolve to luminal cells that result in aggressive spread of the cancer and that these luminal cells can change in their characteristics over time; thus, making them resistant to treatment.

Study author Dr. Andrew Goldstein explained, “People have begun to think about cancers as being driven by stem cells in the same way that many of our adult organs are maintained by dedicated stem cells. Based on this new understanding, a lot of excitement surrounds the concept of going right to the root of the tumor and targeting those stem cells to eradicate the cancer.”

Patients with aggressive prostate cancer are often treated with anti-androgen (anti-male hormone) therapy; the basal stem cells that develop into the cancer cells look different from the luminal cells that maintain the aggressive disease. In addition, the tumor stem cells that are not destroyed by the anti-androgen treatment look different from the previous two. Because of this process, in order to develop an appropriate treatment, the researchers must identify cell types that evolve as the disease and its treatment develop. Now that the researchers have determined that prostate cancer stem cells can change what their appearance, he investigators are now searching for possible elements that are consistent within the stem cells and do not change through stem cell evolution. 

They are of the opinion that this knowledge will help develop drugs that target the evolving cancer stem cells. Thus , they are now attempting to detect some of the factors that define a stem cell regardless of its external appearance. They stress that it is extremely important to understand the continual evolution of the stem cell’s physical appearance, particularly as tumors adapt to become resistant to new and more potent therapies.

Migraine Headaches

Migraines are the second most common type of headache in the United States. In 2009 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 10% of men and nearly 22% of women suffer from migraines or severe headaches. The pain of a migraine usually begins gradually and can last hours. Often light or physical activity worsen the pain, and many people seek relief by lying down in a dark quiet room. Other common symptoms that may accompany a migraine are nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and noise.

Propranolol

Propranolol prevents migraine headaches. It is a beta-blocker, and beta-blockers have been shown to be reduce the frequency of migraines in 60% to 80% of people who use them.

Propranolol was originally used to treat high blood pressure. Of all the beta-blockers, propranolol has proven to be one of the most effective at preventing migraines.

Although there are other medications used to prevent migraine headaches, propranolol is a good choice for people who have high blood pressure, heart disease or anxiety.

Dosage

The dosage that has been shown to be most effective is between 120 mg to 240 mg. Your doctor may start you off with 80 mg daily and monitor how well that works. Most likely your dose will be gradually increased until you have a satisfactory response.

Propranolol comes in two formulations, a short acting tablet and an extended-release capsule. The daily dose does not differ between the two, but with the extended-release formulation you will need to take fewer capsules.

Precautions

Propranolol is not without risk. Many people cannot tolerate it and end up switching to another drug. It can also mask the signs of hypoglycemia and should be used with caution in diabetics.

In some people with asthma, the use of beta-blockers can initiate an asthma attack. In general, those with asthma should not use propranolol.

Promising Results For Curing Peanut Allergy

Scientists may have found a cure for peanut allergy. This is very welcome news since peanut allergy is on the rise and can be deadly. In children peanut allergy is the most prevalent food allergy, followed by allergy to shellfish.

Unlike many other food allergies, many children do not outgrow allergy to peanuts. For some people even a small amount of exposure to peanuts can cause severe symptoms.

Peanut Protein


Those who are allergic to peanuts have to be hyper-vigilant to avoid contact with peanuts. This can become difficult with homemade dishes and foods that have been exposed to peanuts but don’t contain them.

With certain allergies people can be treated to become desensitized to the allergen. This is accomplished by injecting a series of small amounts of the allergen under the skin. Each injection is a little stronger until there is no reaction to the allergen at all.

This is not the case with peanut allergy. Peanut allergy is so serious, and the reactions are often so intense, that it isn’t safe to attempt desensitization in this manner.

To date there are no treatments to prevent peanut allergy. It is managed by eliminating peanuts from the diet and having ready access to an Epi-pen, which is injectable epinephrine.

There is a technique for desensitization that involves sublingual exposure to the offending allergen. It consists of placing a small amount of the allergen under the tongue. This method has been shown to be effective with asthma and allergic rhinitis (continual allergy symptoms of the nose).

Certain food allergies have been successfully treated using this technique, including kiwi, hazelnut, peaches and milk. Researchers have now found that peanut allergy can also be treated this way.

A small study was conducted to determine if treatment of peanut allergy by sublingual exposure was safe and effective. The study participants were treated daily with peanut powder for 68 weeks. At the end of the study the participants could tolerate significantly more peanut powder than at the beginning.

In addition, this method appeared to be safe. There were only minor side effects such as itching in the mouth. These finding are only preliminary; more research needs to be done before this therapy is universally accepted and practiced.

It must be stressed that this experiment was conducted in a controlled environment under medical supervision. No one that is allergic to peanuts should attempt to try this on their own.

Men Who Have Sex With Men And Women (MSMW) And Public Health

A recent study published in the Journal of Preventative Medicine this past June argues that the public health community has not paid enough attention to the needs of bisexual men. In Beyond the Bisexual Bridge, author William Jeffries IV, PhD suggests that men who have sex with men and women (MSMW) are often seen as transmitters of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV.
Bisexual Men Are Not 'Closet Gays', They Really Do Like Men AND Women


The issue at hand is that MSMW are seen as the main way in which certain diseases or epidemics jump from gay men to heterosexuals of both sexes. Jeffries believes that by looking at them as disease vectors and not a population with their own sexual health issues we are making bisexual men more vulnerable to STIs. Although only about two percent of the male population identifies as MSMW, the study indicates that their sexual health needs and experiences are different from those of heterosexual or straight men.

MSMW have a greater chance of experiencing early sexual debut, forced sexual encounters, and sex in exchange for money or something else of value. MSMW tend to have more sexual partners, greater issues with substance abuse, and take more risks in sex with both male and female partners. Because of personal safety issues, adolescent MSMW are more likely to drop out of school. According to the study, this may be one of the reasons that adult MSMW are less likely to have a college degree and more likely to have lower incomes or be homeless.

Jeffries attributes many of these issues to biphobia. Biphobia comes from both gay and heterosexual people who feel that bisexuality is not a legitimate sexual orientation. The view of bisexuals as the STI “bridge” between communities heightens biphobia and may cause MSMW to take additional risks.

MSMW may feel socially isolated and feel psychological distress, which in turn may promote HIV/STI risk through substance use, risky sexual behaviors, and the avoidance of prevention services. Jeffries suggests creating community social spaces that provide opportunities for social support and discussion of sexual health concerns. Sexting And Sexual Behavior On The Increase Among Middle-Schoolers

Sexting incidences are frequently being reported by the media; sadly, a new study has found that both sexting and sexual behavior are increasing among middle-schoolers. The study was published online on January 6 in the journal Pediatrics by researchers at the Bradley/Hasbro Children’s Research Center, Rhode Island Hospital, and The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island.

The aim of the study aimed to examine the frequency of sexting behaviors¬––sexually explicit messages and/or pictures¬¬––among early adolescents as well as the associations between sexting behaviors and sexual behaviors, comprehension of the risks involved in such behaviors, and emotional regulation skills. In addition, the researchers attempted to determine whether differences in risk were associated with text-based compared to photo-based sex.

The study group comprised seventh graders who were participating in a sexual risk prevention trial for at-risk early adolescents; the subjects completed a computer-based survey at baseline regarding sexting behavior (i.e., having sent sexually explicit messages and/or pictures), sexual activities, intentions to have sex, perceived approval of sexual activity, and emotional regulation skills.

The investigators found that 22% of the students reported having sexted in the past six months; sexual messages were acceptable by 17% (71 students), sexual messages and photos were endorsed by 5% (21 students). Pictures were endorsed significantly more often by females and Latinos. Sadly, sexting of any kind was associated with higher rates of engaging in a variety of sexual behaviors; compared to sending text messages only, sending photos was associated with higher rates of sexual activity. This finding was true for a range of behaviors from touching genitals over clothes, to oral sex, to vaginal sex.

The authors concluded that sexting behavior (both photos and text messages) was not uncommon among middle school teens and co-occurred with sexual behavior. They cautioned that these data suggest that phone behaviors, even flirtatious messages, may be an indicator of risk. They recommended that healthcare professionals, parents, and health programs should discuss sexting with early adolescents.

This study reported that a significant number of teens who had just entering puberty were sexting and engaging in sexual activity; thus, parents should be on the lookout for signs that their teen is sexting.

Sexting In Middle School Increases Risky Sexual Behavior

Sexting, the transmission and receipt of explicit sexual material via cell phones) is known to commonly occur among high school students; however, a new study has evaluated the association between sexting among middle school students and risky sexual behavior.

Teenagers Are Sexting


The study authors note that the sexting of text or pictures is commonplace among high school students; however, it is currently unknown whether the activity is associated with sexual activity and sexual risk behavior among middle school students. They explain that, at present, no studies have been published that have assessed these relationships exclusively among middle school students. Therefore, they conducted a study comprised of 1,285 students who were under evaluation by the 2012 Youth Risk Behavior Survey in Los Angeles middle schools. The data was subjected to statistical analysis to evaluate sexting behavior and associations between sexual activity and risky sexual behavior such as unprotected sex.

The researchers found that 20% of students with text-capable cell phones reported receiving a sext and 5% reported sending a sext. In addition, students who sent text messages at least 100 times per day were more likely to report both receiving and sending sexts and to be sexually active. Students who sent sexts and students who received sexts were more likely to report sexual activity. Compared to students who were not sexually active, excessive texting and receiving sexts were associated with both unprotected sex (sending: 4.7-fold increased risk; receiving: 12.1-fold increased risk) and with condom use (sending: 3.7-fold increased risk; receiving: 5.5-fold increased risk).

The investigators concluded that because engaging in sex at an early aged correlates with higher rates of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and teen pregnancies, pediatricians should discuss sexting with young adolescents because this may expedite conversations about STDs and pregnancy prevention. They also recommended that sexting and associated risks should be considered for inclusion in middle school sex education curricula.

This study reports the current prevalence of sexting and risky sexual behavior among middle school students. In addition to pediatricians and school education programs, parents should be proactive regarding sexting activity in their middle schooler. Parents should consider taking a peek at their child’s cellphone to determine whether sext messages are contained therein. If so, a discussion should be initiated (without necessarily mentioning the cellphone examination) to discuss the consequences of unprotected sex. Not uncommonly, a parent discovers that his or her child is sexually active when an unintended pregnancy occurs.

When you are in deep sleep you are abiding in the Self. The Self that has no fears and is able to drop what you are not, the ego. The Absolute, the Self that is in deep relaxation of the physical body. It is a natural state so your body enjoys it, and it makes it easy for your mind to rest.

A residue of the Self exists when you wake up and last for a few moments in that time before your identification wakes up and takes over. During this time you have not yet begun to move out away into the external world, you can retain attention within, in peace and rest even as you move about in the world. This is Reality. You are absolute knowledge.

Daily experiences are transient appearance and falling off of forms and formlessness against the background of the Absolute. To live your life as if you are other than Absolute will cause pain and suffering in constant motion. . You are not what you think you are and your concepts must be decidedly dropped. The Absolute that you are is revealed and there at all times whether you are active or not. This brings you to a time when you must realize you are not “one” and there is no individual.

What can you do to bring your awareness to its natural state?

To be in the natural state requires no movement or doing on your part. The key is to realize if you didn’t do anything, you awareness wouldn’t have left in the first place this morning. Stopping mental doing allows this natural state to come up. Deep stillness is always under an agitated mind or whether you have your attention on it or not.

When you wake up in the morning it is consciousness that gets up

When you are awake consciousness resumes. Your mind and body enjoy experience. When you are at this point, awareness of the “I AM” and activity can be perceived. Let the perceiving happen. You don’t have to do anything, but notice the tendency of your mind to go out to identify. Let your mind be focused inward. Relax in the flow of consciousness and in knowing there is a natural state that you may consciously return to during the day. Meditation or resting activity disarms the doing, thinking mind of identification. Simply put, not getting involved in the stories of your thoughts.

Breaking the habit of gross identification

Meditation in the early morning can help you to keep focused inwardly for the rest of your day. Once you are engaged in your identification you begin building memories and stories and ego. The choice is yours.

It is best to take part in activities to which you are naturally drawn this is part of consciousness leading you to experience, to participate in the natural unfolding of life. Let yourself be moved or not, in a gentle and open way to spiritual practices.

Don’ fall into the tricks of your mind

There are no lasting tricks to happiness. Right now let all your thoughts and beliefs pass, situations come and go. The waking mind is terrified of emptiness and death and brings you suffering because of it. The mind seeks limitations. Know that every thought that you entertain keeps you from or distracts you from enjoying the deep silence within. The sleeping mind knows the vastness within and has experienced it directly and knows it to be excellent.

First apply heat to the affected area with a hot towel or other source of heat. The towel should be as hot as you can take it, but not so hot that it will burn you – if you are not sure make it less hot. You can apply the heat for 1 – 3 minutes. Immediately after removing the hot towel apply ice to the area. Keep the ice on for about the same amount of time. You can do this up to three times in a row, alternating heat and ice. Always end with ice.

The heat forces blood into the affected area, and the ice forces blood out of the area. The process flushes out the area, removing toxins and waste products while clearing out the capillaries and lymphatic vessels of any blockages – helping your body heal itself better.

Lung Disease Researchers Speak Up For Ban Or Limits On Electronic Cigarettes

After the FDA proposed new rules for marketing electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) in April, 2014, the 70,000 member Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS) issued a statement on July 9, 2014 that governments around the world should ban or restrict the use of e-cigs.

The recommendation is that more studies be conducted to determine if e-cigs are safe and whether they are effective in reducing the smoking of cigarettes. It is generally agreed that e-cigs are less toxic to users and the general public than conventional cigarettes. What has been lacking are data on the safety of e-cigarettes with regard to the vapors impact on lung health for users and the general public.

There is now evidence that the by-products of vaporization contain carcinogens. The concentrated nicotine is a cardiovascular dilator that causes higher blood pressure that damages the heart, kidneys and liver.

This recommendation is based upon the absolute certainty that nicotine is highly addicting. E-cigs are the most effective way to get nicotine into the blood stream short of cooking cigarettes in alcohol and shooting the extracted nicotine directly into a vein.

The press release by FIRS mentions that the tobacco industry lied to the public regarding the safety of cigarettes and targeted minors and women in an attempt to increase the number of smokers. The tobacco industry also filtered the cigarettes to allow an increase in the amount of nicotine. Menthol and other “flavoring agents” were added to cloak the tar and nicotine in the cigarettes.

E-cigs call the liquid nicotine extract “juice”. It is nearly pure nicotine, with the only other major ingredients a hydrocarbon that can be vaporized under temperature and so-called flavoring agents. The higher the vaporization temperature, the more toxic the vapors are to the lungs. Newer e-cigs that have been developed to operate at higher voltages increase the quantity of extremely small particles in the vapor.

Maciej Goniewicz of the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY has released research results that show that the vapor generated by e-cigs approach the levels of formaldehyde found in conventional cigarettes with e-cigs that generate higher heat. The details of the study were released on May 15, 2014 in the journal Nicotine & Tobacco Research.

Introduction: Glycerin (VG) and propylene glycol (PG) are the most common nicotine solvents used in e-cigarettes (ECs). It has been shown that at high temperatures both VG and PG undergo decomposition to low molecular carbonyl compounds, including the carcinogens: formaldehyde and acetaldehyde. The aim of the study was to evaluate how various product characteristics, including nicotine solvent and battery output voltage, affect the levels of carbonyls in EC vapor.

E-cig liquids are flavored to appeal to young users with flavors such as cotton candy aimed directly at middle school and high school e-cig users. The e-cig manufacturers provide a website to find the “best” e-cig juices. One site listed popular flavors as The Godfather, Juicy Fruit, Tobaccolicious, Creamsicle, and Tobacco Menthol. Of these flavors, only the Tobacco Menthol is directed at adults instead of minors.

There are currently no age restrictions on e-cig purchases, and the largest growth is among minors. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 20% of high school students have now tried e-cigs. The estimated growth of e-cigs use among minors was estimated at 50% between 2011 and 2012.

E-cigarette experimentation and recent use doubled among U.S. middle and high school students during 2011–2012, resulting in an estimated 1.78 million students having ever used e-cigarettes as of 2012. Moreover, in 2012, an estimated 160,000 students who reported using e-cigarettes had never used conventional cigarettes.

The details of the FINS recommendations show an extremely cautious approach. This will be of temporary comfort to the e-cig manufacturers and users. The public is highly supportive of restricting sales of e-cigs to minors and restrictions of advertising of e-cigs on social media. This is a step in the right direction for improving public health.

Outbreak of Lung Injury Associated With The Use of E-Cigarette or Vaping

The greatest hope to curtail e-cig use comes from the FDA declaring e-cigs to be just another tobacco product, which will then make e-cigs subject to federal, state and local excise taxes. Those already addicted to nicotine will still be able to choose between traditional cigarettes and e-cigarettes. This decision is a bad health choice that leads to serious diseases. At least, these changes will help slow down the growth of electronic cigarette use among children.

Top 10 Steps to Healthy Eating

This article is inspired by an article by Joan Borysenko PhD. The article is titled Five Steps to eating for Better Health. The title of this article is 10 steps to healthy eating. These are practical things you can do to eat healthier and reduce your risk of serious illnesses.

Benefits Of Cooking At Home


        I.            Cook your own food. If you think you are too busy to cook, you are not committed to your own health. Every meal doesn’t have to be prepared by your own hands, but the money you save will allow you to pick good ingredients.

      II.            Use healthy ingredients. The FDA has allowed GMO seeds to be used for grains, root vegetables, cucumbers, sweet corn, etc. Avoid GMO foods where possible, and especially where the foods you are eating are directly from the ground, e.g. potatoes, celery, carrots, etc.

    III.            If you are eating a processed food, read the labels. The food industry has spent hundreds of millions of dollars fighting GMO labeling and paying off Congress to prevent labeling on processed foods.

    IV.            Avoid high risk foods. Pay attention to the fat content, especially trans-fats, and the sugar content. High fructose corn syrup helps create cholesterol and contributes to insulin resistance. Heart disease and diabetes are directly linked to saturated fats and sugar. Avoid them. Hydrogenated oils are used in snacks and they will literally kill you.

      V.            Eat a balanced diet of protein, carbohydrates and fats. Your body needs each of these. The FDA guidelines for carbohydrates and dairy are historically biased by lobbying from the food and dairy industries. Your body needs healthy fats and proteins. Trim off animal fats as much as possible. Avoid high fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners of all kinds.

    VI.            Pay attention to how your body is reacting to what you are eating. If you are sensitive to gluten, reduce or take out wheat and other gluten products from your diet. If dairy or orange juice cause you excess phlegm, stop consuming them. If you are a woman beyond menopause, you should limit soy products or get tested to see if you are genetically susceptible to hormone induced breast cancer.

  VII.            Eat meats that are grown humanely. Animals grown in confined spaces must be fed with antibiotics to keep down diseases. Animals that are fed animal by-products transmit diseases from the animals that they ate. (This is an item from Dr. Borysenko’s list.) Animals that are fed growth hormones and antibiotics are supplying you with potentially disrupting chemicals that can impair your immune system over time.

VIII.            Eat minimally processed foods. There are raw milk cheeses, locally grown vegetables and meats, and whole grains that have not had the nutrition stripped in the processing. Frozen foods are often more nutritious and safer than fresh foods that have been stored. Frozen seafood and frozen vegetables are often better. This is especially true if you are a long way from the source, e.g. eating seafood from a supermarket in Ohio.

    IX.            If the food doesn’t look, smell or taste good, don’t eat it. Each step of this process is important. If you take the first bite and it tastes bad, spit it out. If you are so oblivious that you didn’t notice the mold, or decided it was “probably OK”, you will rue your decision. There is NO five second rule when it comes to bacteria.

      X.            If you don’t buy it, you can’t eat it. Salty snacks, ice cream, candy and other junk foods can be eaten in moderation. If they are in the closet, they are available for consumption. The food industry spends millions in advertising and processing to make their unhealthy products highly attractive. Don’t buy Sugar Frosted Flakes for yourself or children. Don’t be tricked in thinking that trail mix is a health food.
