First apply heat to the affected area with a hot towel or
other source of heat. The towel should be as hot as you can take it, but not so
hot that it will burn you – if you are not sure make it less hot. You can apply
the heat for 1 – 3 minutes. Immediately after removing the hot towel apply ice
to the area. Keep the ice on for about the same amount of time. You can do this
up to three times in a row, alternating heat and ice. Always end with ice.
The heat forces blood into the affected area, and the ice
forces blood out of the area. The process flushes out the area, removing toxins
and waste products while clearing out the capillaries and lymphatic vessels
of any blockages – helping your body heal itself better.
This works best on joints and tendon injuries but it can
also be effective on other areas such as your back, legs, etc. Do not use this
technique for acute injuries (injuries within the last 48 hours, or if there is
any inflammation present).
