Women Who are Active are at Lower Risk for Heart Disease and Stroke

The risk for heart disease and stroke for women appears to have been on the rise over the years. The American Heart Association reported on Feb. 16, 2015, that women who are active a few times a week have a decreased risk of heart disease, stroke and blood clots. Researchers have observed women who are physically active several times per week have lower risks of vascular disease than women who are inactive.

The researchers found that more frequent physical activity does not appear to decrease the risks for heart disease, stroke and blood clots any further. It was observed by the researchers that women who performed strenuous physical activity of a degree which caused sweating or a faster heart beat two to three times per week were approximately 20 percent less likely to develop heart disease, strokes or blood clots in comparison to women who reported little or no activity.

Physical activities which have been found to be associated with decreased risk included walking, cycling, and gardening. Miranda Armstrong, M.Phil., Ph.D, who was the study’s lead author and who is a physical activity epidemiologist at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, says women at middle age who are inactive should attempt to do some activity regularly. Armstrong has added that in order to prevent heart disease, stroke and blood clots, the research results suggest that women don’t need to do activity very frequently since this seems to provide little additional benefit beyond that gained from moderately frequent activity.

This study has been published in the journal Circulation. Although physical activity has generally been found to be associated with decreased risk of vascular disease there has been only limited evidence dealing with the effects of the frequency and duration of various activities on incidence of vascular disease. Reseachers have now concluded that moderate physical activity is associated with a decreased risk of heart disease, stroke and blood clots. However, this research does not suggest any progressive decrease in risk of vascular diseases with increasing frequency of activity. Nevertheless, the bottom line is women should stay active to be healthy.
