Vitamin D May Keep Prostate Cancer From Becoming Lethal

As men age they become more vulnerable to being hit with prostate cancer. The American Chemical Society reported via Newswise on March 22, 2015, vitamin D may keep prostate cancer which is low grade from becoming aggressive. This research will be presented at a meeting of the American Chemical Society.

Prostate Cancer Symptoms

It has been observed that the progression of less aggressive, or low grade, prostate tumors could be slowed down or even reversed by taking vitamin D supplements. In such cases such positive results may be seen without the need for surgery or radiation. It appears that supplementation with vitamin D may improve low grade prostate cancers by decreasing inflammation.

With low grade prostate cancer many urologists prefer “active surveillance" over treating the disease because the cure using surgery or radiation is generally worse than the disease. Nevertheless, knowing that they have even low grade prostate cancer can cause patients along with their families a lot of anxiety. Researchers observed that when men with low grade prostate cancer took vitamin D supplements for a year 55 percent of them showed less aggressiveness or even complete disappearance of their tumors.

Mayo Clinic reports that vitamin D is present in many foods, including eggs, fish, fortified milk, and cod liver oil. The body's daily production of vitamin D is also nurtured by the sun. Vitamin D taken alone or together with calcium may improve bone health and decrease fractures. Vitamin D may also help prevent osteoporosis, cancer, high blood pressure, and other diseases. Certainly it's a remarkable finding that vitamin D may help reverse or prevent prostate cancer.
